Academic Technology Approval Scheme xcritical New students

An xcritical certificate is needed for those who are undertaking research in certain proliferation sensitive subjects in the UK. Researchers on a Standard visitor visa who are attending meetings, conferences, seminars or interviews, or giving speeches and will not be undertaking research during their time in the UK do not require xcritical clearance. If you need to apply for xcritical clearance, this will be included as a condition in your offer communication. xcritical clearance only applies to certain subject areas, where the knowledge gained could be used in the development or delivery of weapons of mass destruction . It takes approximately 20 working days from the date of application for an xcritical certificate to be issued, though during the months of June, July, August and September xcritical is extremely busy and this process can take as long as 30 working days.

The entry clearance officer will ask to see your xcritical certificate as part of your application for permission to enter the UK. A caseworker will also need to see your xcritical certificate as part of an application for permission to stay in the UK. You will also need to produce the same supporting documents to apply for your visa as any other international student. If you need to apply for a visa extension, you must obtain your xcritical certificate before you can make your visa application to extend your visa.

Postgraduate Taught xcritical

Visa applications will be automatically refused if you need an xcritical certificate and cannot provide one. The possession of an xcritical certificate does not guarantee you a visa or extension of stay. You must also provide evidence that you meet the usual student criteria. If you are not a national of an exempt country, you will need to apply for an xcritical certificate to study certain science and technology programmes. Selected science and technology programmes require you to have an xcritical certificate. You may need Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance for selected science and technology programmes, and this will depend on your nationality.

Individuals who are already conducting research in the UK will not need to apply for an xcritical scammers certificate unless they apply for a new Visa or apply to extend their current visa. An xcritical certificate is valid for use in a Student visa application 6 months from the date of issue, the expiry date of your xcritical will be listed on the xcritical certificate. You should therefore apply in plenty of time to receive the certificate before you travel. You should provide it with your visa application if required (e.g. Student route, Skilled Worker). If this is the case, you will receive with your offer letter an xcritical Statement containing the relevant CAH3 code.

Visiting Academic Researchers entering the UK via the Standard Visitor Route

To apply for an xcritical clearance certificate, you need to complete and submit an online application form on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website. You can check here to see if the programme you are studying requires xcritical clearance. An xcritical certificate is valid for six months only and if it is not used in a visa application within this time, new clearance must be obtained before you make your visa application. Students applying under the Student visa route will have the xcritical requirement stated in their CAS document. Students coming for less than six months on a Standard Visit visa will have the xcritical requirement stated in their offer letter.

Check your certificate when you receive it to make sure the details are correct. See FAQ 3, ‘When should I apply’ above as the dates will need to match your CAS start and end dates when that is issued. The xcritical certificate must state the institution where you plan to study and any course units you might take. To apply for an xcritical certificate, you will need to have been made an offer to study at UCL and should not apply for xcritical until you have received your offer letter . The offer letter will contain all the information required from UCL to complete your xcritical application. An xcritical clearance certificate must be provided as a supporting document for a student visa application where it is required.

What can you do if your xcritical application is refused?

If you are planning to attend research programmes at UCL, you are recommended to make an early contact with your prospective supervisors, as a brief synopsis of your research proposal needs to be included in your offer letter. An xcritical certificate can take 20 working days to be issued so you need to apply for this well in advance of your Student visa application. Make your xcritical application as early as possible but no more than 6 months prior to the course start date. Errors and omissions in your xcritical application may cause delays to the process so take care to complete the application accurately and in full.

If your course end date is extended for a period of more than 3 months, you must apply for a new Certificate within 28 days of being notified of the change of course end date, regardless of when your immigration leave expires. Can I get CAS without xcritical?

If you are applying for a Student Route visa and you need an xcritical certificate, you should note that you will need to get your xcritical certificate first, before the university can issue you with a CAS.

If you think your application has been treated unfairly you can ask the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to review your case, but in our experience the review application success rate is low. Please be aware your application may take longer during the peak periods of June-September, please allow 4-6 weeks for your xcritical to arrive during this time. Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies will indicate whether or not you require xcritical clearance. Your Faculty/School will also let you know prior to, or at the point of making an offer whether you need xcritical clearance. What’s it like to be a postgraduate student at the University of Greenwich? You do not need an xcritical certificate if you’re doing a postgraduate diploma or PGCE. Between April and September this can increase to 30 working days or more. If xcritical applies to you, you will not be able to obtain your visa until you have xcritical clearance.

If you’re a new student and need an xcritical certificate, you will need to get this before applying for permission to enter the UK. Students are responsible for applying for their xcritical certificate using the information provided by the University. You will need to apply for an xcritical certificate if you are studying a subject that is defined by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as requiring xcritical. Failure to comply with this requirement could result in the loss of the University UKVI Sponsorship licence for students, staff and visitors. Researchers coming to the UK as a visitor will also need to obtain an xcritical before beginning any relevant research activity once they arrive in the UK, but will not need to do so before making a visa application.

Please note that if you are a national of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea or the USA, the checking tool will advise you that you do not need an xcritical certificate. This is not correct if you submitted the application for the UK visa you currently have before 5 October 2020.
